The Shop

An obligatory stop on a crawl along one of downtown Lisbon’s busiest streets, Churrasco is privileged in that it receives guests attending one of the several cultural locations nearby: the Coliseu dos Recreios, Teatro Politeama and the Dona Maria II National Theatre. A favourite haunt of artists from its early days, it even functioned as a waiting room for circus artists who waited for their contracts there in the 1960s.

As a restaurant, it has been the scene of diverse stories since 1961, but its collection dates back to 1946, when the restaurant only sold beverages and refreshments. In 1985 there was a change of management, with the new management still in place today. Manuel Miranda, one of the business partners, is so confident in his restaurant’s menu that he says he feels sorry for those customers who come in and don’t even look at the menu because they already know what they want – the chicken. The famous spit-roasted chicken served with fresh potato chips and creamed greens, a house recipe, made with turnip tops and no cream.
