The Shop
António Lucas, the current owner, was once a customer. When he learned that the shop was about to close in 1998, he immediately understood that that would be the end of a unique place, one with an abundance of shapes and forms – many of them unique – would simply be lost. Five centuries of moulds in all the great European styles would be melted down and turned into raw metal. Luckily, Mr. Lucas was determined to avoid that. Today, customers still have access to a workshop which, more than just suspended in time, seems to transport us to a world apart. Slowly and patiently, the gaze sweeps across the profusion of moulds and forms piled and accumulated all around the space, and always discovers something new. And something old, too.
This is the last shop in Lisbon that makes reproductions in copper alloy moulds. It also takes on smaller jobs – everything that has to do with door and drawer handles, furniture finishings, keys and locks. It is a shop, but also a workshop. It is a living museum, a little oasis on the slope of the Principe Real hill, and without question, a place worth visiting.
